Viking Mafia was a game designed by maurice and hosted by maurice & Auramyna based on original design in a Norse Viking setting.
It began on June 28th, 2011 and ended in a Baddie win in D4 (July 8th, 2011).
Game Mechanics
Rules
- OOP – Indy > Baddie > Goodie
- RID Kill > trap > block > save > kill > spy
- Night Kill and RID Kill can not be acted on. Actions fail only if target is saved or trapped.
- Kills do not work as a block
- Trap works as a block and save.
- Vote Manips can not be acted on.
- Tie lynch = all in lynch flip a coin for their lives
- If Anders is blocked, then the chosen action is considered used.
- If Quinby is blocked in any way, it will show up as such. However, he will still discover the role.
- Spies, unused saves, Vote Manips will not be shown in Night or Day Posts. Only all traps, blocks, kills, needed saves and all Indy actions.
- Recruits show up as purple in the night post, until lynched.
Role Description
Goodies: Vikings WinCon - get rid of the Mutineers
- Lars - The captain of the ship. He can save one player per night, but never the same player twice in a row unless there are five or fewer players. He can save himself.
- Sven - Can RID Kill once per night.
- Björn - Dice roll determines his action each night (1-save, 2-Kill, 3-block, 4-spy role, 5-RID Kill, 6-none)
- Thorfin - Can trap a player for the night or for the night and day meaning the player can not be voted for nor post during the day. The trap acts as a block and a save.
- Quinby -Can discover the identity of one role per night who targets him. If more than one role targets him, he must choose whose identity he wants to discover.
- Anders - Can copy a role each night, but each role only once, unless all living roles have been chosen (this includes the double-dip ability restriction that follows). If the role he chooses belongs to a dead player, then that action will fail. If the role contains a passive secret ability then the ability will apply but Anders will not be told. He may not choose both spy roles, block roles or vote manip roles.
Baddies: The Mutineers WinCon - be in the majority. Have NightKill and BTSC
- Magnus - The leader of the Mutineers. He may not be the first baddie to die.
Faction TBD: The Recruits WinCon - win with faction. Explanation: Once roles are determined but before they have been distributed to anyone besides Magnus, Magnus will submit the names of the roles he wants to recruit. He will choose one from each pair. They will gain BTSC with him immediately. The other three players will join the goodies.
- Spy - One player can spy a role. One can choose to spy who a player targeted or who targeted that player.
- Godfrid
- Roald
- Block - Each can block a player at night
- Olaf
- Igor
- Vote Manipulator - One can make any vote x0, x1, or x2. One has an allotment of 5 extra votes that can he add to other players' votes throughout the game. He can add any and all votes that he has remaining. If Anders chooses this role he will get to add one vote if any remain.
- Hans
- Kristoffer
Indy: The Stowaway WinCon - Get thrown off of the ship (killed or lynched) after D2.
- Fisk - secret ability
In addition there may be other secret abilities

Host's Summary
The truth is that when I developed the game I envisioned players like araver having to work to get the information. It was there, just not as gift wrapped as most games. But araver didn't start, Glyc was killed N1, Hirk and GM were baddies, Yuli an Indy. Nobody listened to lh until he died.
I do want to thank araver for jumping in and changing what was a sure runaway into what could have been a goodie win. And thank nox for sticking with the game and not just checking in and sticking with his first thoughts. And to the baddies for being jerks
Despite what I was told were poor odds for the goodies, the goodies should have won. They were 30 seconds from winning. After D3, it would have been 5-3 and Hirk would have died N4 making it 4-2 and basically a NK/lynch swap. Slick flipped his vote and EDM never submitted a vote mod. So I hate to say it but, while I know tweaks are in order, the goodies lost this, aided by bad luck - mostly Hirk's blind recruiting... OK 30 seconds is not quite true as the vote mod was not submitted. But that still leaves 50/50 for Aaryan to die. Even at 4-3, killing Hirk and losing EDM still gives the goodies lynching power.
Nothing, save the Indy being lynched went in the goodie's favor. I took it that finding Magnus was not luck. Nox made Hirk out to be baddie. They lost their faction spy N1. They lost their RID kill D2. They were not working together, even ignoring logic. And yet they should have won. What went their way save for not lynching a baddie D1?
A bigger game would have made the optimal moves easier to pull off.
That being said, I have acknowledged in ghost btsc that this game needed an extra goodie, extra faction spy type or both (probably both). Oh yeah, I also mentioned in ghost btsc that goodie RID kills should have been RFID kills. I am not arguing that it was favored in the baddies favor...but 20%? (I'm still holding off on my post regarding designing a scoring system to fit desired results, but meh)
Many many thanks to Aura for cohosting. She pushed me to study up on Vikings and was an excellent sounding board. She understands the Host's responsibilities as far as interacting with the players. I would play one of her games in a heartbeat!
Co-host's Summary
The goodies very nearly could have won this game, if Slick hadn't flashvoted against his own faction, if EDM had've been alive on the last day, if the goodies had read the thread and not contradicted themselves with their actions... etc.
Also, Glycereine/Quinby dies N1 which removed the ability to discern between the purples faction-wise. Quinby -Can discover the identity of one role per night who targets him. If more than one role targets him, he must choose whose identity he wants to discover. (secret ability – if a recruit targets him he discovers the faction as well as the identity of the role.)
Good game all, it was fun watching it all play out!
MVP goes to Araver. With his leadership and analysis, he greatly improved the goodies chances of winning, if they had listened to him. After the day 2 post, he had worked out to a high degree of accuracy most of the roles. He basically turned the game around and gave the goodies a fighting chance!
Honorable mentions also go to Aaryan from the Baddies and darth nox from the Goodies.
- Aaryan made some gutsy maneuvers such as hinting at being the goodie RID kill and various other claims he made on behalf of himself and his teammates. These moves paid of initially, blinding the goodies to his baddieness but towards the end, he got a little overconfident and his actions gave away his team mates. But all's well that ends well, hey? Live dangerously! He was also very active in the baddie BTSC and the main thread.
- Darth nox made a great move on the final night, realising he could copy the baddies NK, and choosing Aaryan, the vote manipulator, to NK. He also correctly identified Hirk on N2, unfortunately forgetting Magnus couldn't die first, but nevertheless giving the goodies a clue to watch who Hirk was allied with.
- Which brings me to Hirk, who receives the award for Most Entertaining Player/Posts. After being outed, he gave us all a lot of comic relief with his WiFOM and baddie humor. Who says you can't have fun after you've been outed as a Baddie? Thanks for the laughs
Sorry no rep points for the last 3 but accept our commendations.
Maurice pushed me to study up on vikings as I knew 0 about them. And I certainly am putting a game together; I'm just indecisive about what roles to use
Also, thanks to mo for letting me co-host with him. I hope I was a good grasshopper

Sven walked into Lars' quarters. "Sir, it is true," he explained to his captain. "Magnus is planning a mutiny. And he is currently recruiting".
Lars put down his fish and wiped his beard. He took a swig of beer from his mug. Finally, he looked up at Sven. "I am not surprised. We must not let him know we are aware of his plans. We should be fairly quiet about this until we can quell it. But do tell Björn, Thorfin, Quinby and Anders. They are men I can trust, and men whose services we will need." Lars waved Sven out of his quarters. He walked over to his desk and took out a map. The Runestone would make it to Vinland. Lars would see to it. Magnus had made up his mind. Vinland was no place for Vikings. They needed to stay near the Norweigian Sea. The Runestone should never venture further than Iceland. Shetland was his preferred landing spot. The climate was mild, the food was good. But mostly Magnus knew the economy thrived just enough to make it worth their while to pillage and the security was substandard. The women of Shetland were also quite charming. One by one Magnus contacted his recruits. And one by one they did not disappoint. He asked them to meet him on the deck, near the boats stern. That night Magnus and his recruits would secretly strike, marking the commencement of their mutiny. Fisk heard the discussion. He knew that this was both a blessing and a curse. He didn't want the chaos that could cause him to be found. But at the same time, if he was smart, he could use the mutiny to his advantage. But he had to make sure he made it to Greenland. Getting thrown off of the ship too soon would not do. |
Night 1 |
---|
The Runestone found for the first time in weeks calm waters. But the waters were about to get choppy on deck.
Olaf was proud of the mead he'd been brewing since the trip began. He came out of his quarters with two pints and looked for a willing (or unwilling even) volunteer to try it out. He found darth nox on deck looking out at the icebergs floating near the horizon. Darth nox wanted to please Olaf, so he took a chug. Olaf knew that a chug would be too much for darth nox, but he bit his lip. Darth nox put down his pint and stared at Olaf, who was pleased to see darth nox's eyes roll to the back of his head just before he hit the deck. Igor had a new game he invented. He hoped someone would play with him. He explained the game to Yuli. Yuli was not to sure but agreed to test the game out. Igor lifted his club, twisted his torso back and took a big swing at Yuli's head. Yuli staggered...staggered...staggered. He was able to regain his balance. It was his turn. He lifted his club over his head. Before he could take his swing, things went black and Yuli was done for the night. Thorfin was determined to help out his captain. He thought about who would betray the honor of not only Lars, but himself as well. He made his way down the deck and saw darth nox passed out. He wreaked of mead. Vikings surely loved to drink but nobody was around darth nox. Thorfin reasoned that darth nox must have been building up the nerve for some evil deeds. "Reason enough to lock him in his room for the night", he thought. Magnus wanted to make sure that this first kill went smoothly. He grabbed his sharpest battle axe from his wall. Magnus searched out his target and was pleased to find him alone. He snuck up behind him and swung his axe and his targets neck, severing his head cleanly. He dumped the body into the ocean and took the head into his quarters. Magnus boiled the head so that the skull was cleaned of parts. He held up his new prize and laughed to himself. This no longer resembled Glycereine in any way. Fisk made up his mind. He was going to need help. Something he overheard the night before gave him an idea. Recruits... "What if I find someone I can act like I know and convince them to vouch for me?" he asked himself. "Then I can stay on the boat until we get to Greenland." He looked for someone who he thought he knew the name for. As he came up to Gmaster he got nervous. He decide to trust his gut. He had overheard enough conversations and had some certainty he has the name right. GMaster stared at him inquisitively. Once GMaster heard his name come from Fisk's mouth he was more nervous, but intrigued. |
Day 1 |
---|
It was a quiet day on the longship Runestone. Many of the Vikings wiled away the day sleeping in their quarters while the others fished off the side of the ship. ‘Twas their hope they could meet as a group and single out some of the mutineers. However, the conversation was as slow as the fishing.
As the sun began to descend in the sky, several of the men woke from their siestas and made their way to the top of the ship. A few members of the crew were questioned and released. “Who among us is not here?” they asked, and found that Elfin and Hirkala were missing from the ship. They searched for them fruitlessly while arguing over who was the more likely to be a saboteur. “Elfin is our newest member, he has probably got lost in the bowels of the ship again. But where is Hirkala hiding?.” Just then Hirkala poked his head out from the kitchen: “I was cooking up some salted shark fins for our evening feast, you ungrateful wretches! Now go make yourselves useful and bring me some mead from the storage hold.” Darth Mask and darth nox lumbered down the stairs and lowered themselves down a thin ladder at the end of the hallway. They fumbled around in the dark room for the opened box of mead vessels. Just then, someone grabbed darth nox’s ankle. “sshhh!” Darth Mask lit his lamp and saw Yuli in a huddled lump on the floor. “Who are you?” the two Vikings exclaimed. They dragged Yuli up to the main deck and presented him to the crew. Yuli pleaded with the men: “Please! I just need to get to Greenland. I was told the grass is greener on the other side!” But the men ignored his pleas. They grabbed his papers out of Yuli’s pocket. “Fisk! What kind of a name is that? If you want to go to Greenland, you’ll have to swim.” And with that, EDM and Hirkala turfed him over the side of the ship. But not before Fisk had a chance to turn around and wink at the one friend he had made on the ship..... |
Night 2 |
---|
Björn thought long and hard about what this journey would mean to him. He wanted to make sure it would succeed. He looked up to the heavens for guidance on what he should do. The stars spoke to him and the message was pretty clear to Björn. He made his way to the deck and found Slick. Björn looked around and found a five pound bag of flour. He used the bag to knock Slick across the back of the head.
Olaf had made a second batch of mead. He knew the first batch was pretty strong and wanted to test the potency of this batch. He found Marqueesa in the dining room. She was more than willing to try Olaf’s concoction. “Don’t take a big chug,” warned Olaf. Marqueesa did as was told and took in a swig. Within a few seconds, she was passed out. “That’s good,” thought Olaf. “This batch is stronger.” Igor loved his new game so much that he thought he’d share it with someone else. He found lionheart and explained the rules. Lionheart thought about it and agreed. “But,” he explained, “I’ll only play if I get to go fir…”. Before he could finish, Igor lifted his club and thwacked lionheart across the chin with an uppercut. Lionheart flew back and was out before he hit the ground. Thorfin was not satisfied with yesterday’s proceedings. The mutineers were still aboard his captain’s ship. He followed GMaster as he went to the head. He removed his helmet and wedged the horn under the door, trapping Gmaster for the night and the next day. Magnus went into the kitchen and saw the bowls of soup that had been prepared for that night’s supper. He walked over to his target’s bowl and dropped in some Wolfsbane. At supper Magnus watched intently as Shadow slurped down her soup. He was pleased to see her take her last gulp and then clench her throat. Shadow took a quick look around the room and then dropped dead. Anders trailed his target. He studied his moves. He practiced them. He then decided to try his newly acquired skill. He saw Hirkala. He slowly approached him and drew his sword. “Hirkala!” Anders exclaimed as he lunged at him. “I know who you are!” “Fool!” replied Hirkala as he brushed Anders aside and made his escape. “Then you should have known better!” |
Day 2 |
---|
After the recent attacks and deaths, it was decided something had to be done. A few lead members gave the order: “All crew must meet on the main deck after breakfast and we shall get to the bottom of these happenings.” There wasn't much of a turnout but regardless, the crew that were present were questioned about their whereabouts and true identity. However, this left the men more confused and paranoid than before. They began to turn on one another, accusing their former friends of being part of the mutineer cell.
Fingers were pointed and blame shifted but in the end, Lionheart was the unlucky victim of their wrath. The vikings surrounded him, taunting him to admit his part in the betrayal of the crew. As the chanting got louder, one of them pulled out a battle axe and thwocked Lionheart on the back of the neck. With blood gushing out of his wound, they dragged him to the side of the ship to throw him over to the sharks. As they hoisted him over the edge, Lionheart proclaimed “I was ready to kill the betrayers! But I couldn't identify them in time!” And as Sven slid down the side of the ship into the territory of the circling sharks, the crew realised their terrible mistake. |
Night 3 |
---|
Olaf needed more potatoes for his latest alcoholic concoction. He found a sack of them beneath the deck. A thought crossed his mind. He raced the sack over to his bunk and emptied the potatoes underneath it. He then ran across to a napping _araver and pulled the sack over his head and tied it as tightly as he could. He then dumped _araver into a dark corner of the pantry, rendering his rest useless. He'd be doing nothing tonight.
Igor wanted to try his new game on Aaryan. Aaryan was not going to fall for that game. Instead he took out some jacks and handed them to Igor. Igor looked down at the jacks in his hand and shrugged his shoulders. He pelted Aaryan across the he face with the handful of jacks. Some jacks became lodged in Aaryan's face, doing just enough damage to send him to the infirmary for the night. Magnus walked proudly across the deck. He needn't be sneaky anymore. The Vikings knew who he was, but could do little to stop him. Magnus was now just taunting the crew. To display his power he walked up to Marqueesa and pushed her into the frozen water. Within a few seconds she popped up, frozen as a popsicle and most certainly dead. |
Day 3 |
---|
On the good ship lollipop http://www.mafiamaniac.net/img/Smilies/whistle.gif.... Oh sorry, I didn't see you there.
On the longship, Runestone, the vikings were arguing amongst themselves. Swords glinted and flashy theories were proposed. The mutineers had remained unnoticed long enough and today the men were determined to get it right lest the future of their voyage be ruined. The only way to make it to Vinland was to seek out the imposters and turf them off the ship. Akriti or Aaryan, Aaryan or Akriti. Both put up an honorable fight. But as dark rain clouds moved across the sky, they threw a haze across the crew's vision. Slick stepped in: "Stop, Stop, Stop. I've changed my mind. Akriti must be the mutineer." Just as Aaryan was about to be lynched, the tides changed and Akriti was in the hot seat. As huge puffs of smoke blew out of Araver's ears and darth nox and EDM comforted him, the rest of the crew encircled Akriti taunting her. Aaryan stepped forward and in one swift move impaled Akriti on his sword. They picked up Igor and threw him over the edge to swim with the fishies. |
Night 4 |
---|
Olaf was on the deck when he saw the full moon on the horizon. That meant three full moons had passed since he began brewing his latest attempt at beer. He couldn't find his barrel tap. He panicked. He saw araver walking by and grabbed him. Holding him like a battering ram he charged araver headfirst into the barrel. The horn of araver's helmet tapped a hole in the barrel, but araver was knocked out.
Magnus was still having fun tormenting the Vikings. He slowly walked by each of them, jumping at them as he walked by. "Stop being so mean!" EDM squealed. "You wanna see mean?" Magnus asked. He then grabbed EDM's stuffed Viking and threw it into the cold water. EDM jumped in after it and managed to save it and swim back to the Runestone. But before he could climb back on board, she was struck in the head by an oar and drowned. Anders was ready to test his skills after three nights. He had watched and mimicked different people with varying degrees of success. He felt he was ready for his biggest challenge. He watched Magnus and his recruits. He studied their abilities, with awe, but always careful to remember what he had seen. Finally, Anders searched out his victim. He found Aaryan. He ran up to him, removing his own helmet as he neared. When he was within a step, Anders swung his helmet upwards and pierced Aaryan underneath the chin, the horn making its way out the top of Aaryan's skull. |
Day 4 |
---|
The Mutineers gathered on the deck. They mocked the Vikings. They finally settled on lynching darth nox. Slick jumped in.
"No way. We are on equal footing here. We will fight you on this. We still honor the person who brought us here. Should I tell you who it is? I spied them you know?" Darth nox stepped forward. "And we are not on equal footing, actually. I only count two of you. Where is your leader? Hiding somewhere, afraid?" Darth Mask replied, nervously, "Well actually he's coming...I think. He's got a secret that he'd like to share with you...I hope." As the day grew closer to an end the Mutineers began to fear for their lives. Why had they joined in the mutiny, they began to wonder. Now they were exposed and were minutes away from being thrown overboard. Suddenly a horn blew. Not bashful about making a grand entrance, Hirkala marched up to the deck. "I have arrived. GMaster, throw darth nox overboard. Darth Mask, set sail for Shetland. The mutiny was a success boys." "What are you talking about?" asked araver. "araver...I respect you Bjorn. I shall spare you if you will join our mutineer. See darth nox will be thrown overboard. My secret is that when you kill Aaryan last night, I was able to inherit his ability. I am a heavy voter. Speaking of heavy, Slick, we shall spare you as well. araver, dress him up as the fat lady, we'll need some comic relief until we get to Shetland." The Runestone slowly turned around and charted a new course, to Shetland. |
