A Guard (also called a Bodyguard) is a role that prevents another role from dying while the Guard is still alive. In some cases, if the protected role is targeted for a kill the Guard is killed.

Variations

In game theory, the (Body)Guard can treated as either:

  • an active save ability that allows the Bodyguard to choose a player to protect each night.
  • a passive save ability that always targets the same player, even if the Guard does not know the identity of that player.

Several variations are possible for the passive ability:

  1. A role is unkillable while the Bodyguard is alive, kill actions will fail on the protected player
  2. A role cannot be killed while the Bodyguard is alive, kill actions on the protected player will instead kill the Bodyguard
  3. A role can be killed while the Bodyguard is alive, but the attacker will be killed by the Bodyguard (Passive Avenger)
  4. A role cannot be killed while the Bodyguard is alive, kill actions on the protected player will instead kill the Bodyguard AND the attacker will die along with the Bodyguard (Bodyguard/Avenger mix)

The active ability can also have the same variations, but the first one is typically considered as being a separate role Doctor:

  1. kill actions will fail on the protected player (practically equivalent to the Doctor)
  2. kill actions on the protected player will instead kill the Bodyguard
  3. kill actions on the protected player will not fail but the attacker will be killed by the Bodyguard (Active Avenger)
  4. kill actions on the protected player will instead kill the Bodyguard AND the attacker will die along with the Bodyguard (Bodyguard/Avenger mix)
