Mafia III was a game designed and hosted by Unreality
It began on July 8th, 2008 and ended in a Goodie win in N5 (July 13th, 2008).
Mafia III is a game of danger, deceit and murder set in the desert trading city of Oasis. Here, in the middle of the vast desert that serves as a border between the country of Content Phoenix and its hostile neighbor, Quarky, Oasis has been the new target of a Mafia group, killing the Innocents by night. But also, there are Quarky Agents- spies sent by Quarky to infiltrate the city. They were sleeper agents, waiting for the right moment. With the Mafia in town, the right moment is NOW. The Quarky Agents, not knowing each other's identities, will operate within the sandy streets of Oasis. The Innocents are an angry mob by day, lynching one person among them every day who may be a baddie. And of course, drawn to all the ongoings, the Grim Reaper is in Oasis, sharpening his/her scythe for the suspenseful times ahead.
21 players: 4 Mafiosos, 2 Quarky Agents, 1 Grim Reaper, 14 Innocents.
- It sucks to die first (and second, too). The first person to die will be invincible for the first night and first day of Mafia IV, and the second person to die will be invincible for the first night of Mafia IV. There is nobody invincible for Mafia III, since Puzzlegirl and Dnae aren't playing in this game
Mafia - win by killing all the Innocents and the Grim Reaper. Every night they choose one person to bump off via PMs (this is the only time PMing is allowed in the game!!!). Also, at the beginning of the game, the Mafia is informed of who the Bomb is and what type of Detective the Detective is. Also, any night, but not two nights in a row, the Mafia can opt to "rough up" someone, in which two implications are given: do not continue your line of accusations, or we will kill you / do not reveal that you were roughed up, or we will kill you. Roughing up is an option for the Mafia, and can have outcomes that aren't always good for the Mafia- so only do this if you've thought about it and want to.
- Thief- at night, the Thief can opt to steal from one person (once stolen from, they can never steal from that person again). The Thief cannot steal two nights in a row. If a Detective or Spy investigates the Thief the next day after a theft, the Thief appears as the identity of the person they stole from. This has no affect on the Inspector. Also, in the night post, everyone was informed that the person's house was broken into
- Assassin- if the Doctor or Healer visits the Assassin to save/heal them, the Assassin kills them after being saved (or just kills them, if the Assassin isn't in danger). If the Mayor stops the lynching of the Assassin, the Assassin assassinates the Mayor during his/her escape
- Bankroller- the Bankroller is a cashman behind the Mafia. If the Bankroller dies (at night or day, doesn't matter), his/her role is given away as well as the specific role of "Bankroller"- normally, if a Mafioso dies during a lynching, their specific role isn't given away. But the Bankroller's is.
- Godfather- leader of the local Mafia ring. The Godfather can investigate one person any night, but not two nights in a row. The Godfather is told what general faction the investigated person belongs to (ie, Mafia/Innocent/QA/GR)
Quarky Agents - the Quarky Agents are spies sent into Oasis by the hostile neighboring country of Quarky. The Agents' objective is to kill the Sphinx, for getting rid of the Guardian of the Desert would help Quarky's advance northward through the desert. Of course, the Sphinx has to die while it's a Sphinx, not while it's still the Illusionist. The QAs also have a secondary mission: if the main mission becomes impossible, the QAs are informed of this and can then win by, the VERY NEXT DAY, if the Innocents lynch a specific player (which is randomly chosen by me). If the QAs fail the secondary mission too, their identities are outed and the lynching that day is a mass lynching. In the beginning of the game, the QAs are independently PMed! They do not know each others' identities. Each night, they PM a target, and only with majority votes will their target be killed. However, if it gets down to 1 QA left, he/she can only kill every even night. If a QA can successfully deduce the other QA's identity, the QA can PM the host with enough evidence and will gain BTSC with each other.
Grim Reaper - wins by killing the Vigilante (if this happens early enough, we will play for "second place"). The Grim Reaper kills every even-numbered night
Innocents - win by killing the Mafia, the QAs, and the Grim Reaper. During the day, a lynching vote occurs, and the condemned person gets publicly executed and their role revealed. Roles are not revealed if killed at night. Each Innocent has a special role
- Doctor and Healer- the Doctor and Healer are basically the same thing, with just different methods of practicing medicine. They save someone every night by PMing the host. If this person is targeted for death by someone, the person will be saved by the Doctor/Healer and live. The Doctor/Healer cannot save the same person two times in a row. They can save themselves, but only once in the game
- Vigilante- knows who the Defender is. The Vigilante kills for the Innocents every odd-numbered night, except for the 1st night. Can choose not to kill
- Defender- knows who the Vigilante is. While the Defender is alive, the Vigilante cannot die, and gets out of every death situation with badass awesomeness
- Inspector- PMed by the host with one Mafia identity at the beginning of every odd-numbered day (1st, 3rd, 5th and 7th for the four Mafiosos). After that, if they are still alive and the game is still continuing, they get PMed the identities of the QAs (the 9th and 11th days), and then the Grim Reaper the 13th day. Of course it won't go that far, but if it does, that's the order of it
- Sage- can PM anytime to get the list of the people the Doctor has been saving. Also, the Sage can choose to PM every even-numbered day to see how many Mafiosos are alive
- Spy- can spy on anyone ever even-numbered day. They PM the host who they want to spy on and receive back that person's role
- Bomb- knows who the Inspector is. When (if) the Bomb dies, there is a half chance that they will take their killer down with them. If their killer is the Mafia, a random Mafioso will be killed- however the Mafia is informed at the beginning of the game who the Bomb is. If the Bomb's killer is the Grim Reaper, the Grim Reaper would blow up. If the Bomb is lynched, the Innocent who was most outspoken for the lynching (chosen by the host) is blown up. Also, because of the Bomb's mechanical parts, he/she is an effective Lie Detector. Any day, but not two days in a row, the Bomb can PM me with a quote that someone said, and I'll tell them the true-or-false-ness of the statement (they can also bold a specific statement from the quote to lie detect)
- Illusionist- every even-numbered night (the same night that the Grim Reaper kills), the Illusionist can make illusionary copies of one person to protect them ONLY from the Grim Reaper (the Mafia ain't fooled). The Illusionist cannot protect self, nor can they protect the same person twice in a row. When (if) the Grim Reaper dies, and the Illusionist is still alive, they transform into the Sphinx:
- Sphinx- appears normal by day, but every odd-numbered night, they can protect one person (not themself and not the same person 2x in a row). If someone tries to kill the protected person, the would-be killer gets asked a riddle, to which they get one chance to guess correctly, OR they can back down and withdraw if they think the riddle is too hard (because of this, I make up the riddle, not the Sphinx). If they do accept the riddle, however, and guess correctly, the Sphinx steps aside and allows the killing. If they guess incorrectly, the Sphinx kills the killers. All of the killers. ie, the entire Mafia would be slaughtered (or if were the Grim Reaper or Vigilante, just the one person). That's why there's the option of backing down from the kill. If someone tries to kill the Sphinx at night while the Sphinx is off protecting someone, the killer searches all night in vain. However, if someone tries to kill the Sphinx on an even-numbered night, the Sphinx can be killed normally, as he/she is not protecting anyone that night
- Squeaker - knows who the Defender is. If the Squeaker dies, he/she reveals the identity of the Defender... if the Squeaker is lynched, the character shouts it out to everyone during the lynching. If the Squeaker is killed by the Mafia or the Grim Reaper, in the night post it is shown that he/she squeaked, but not what they said (the killers get privately PMed the Defender's identity). If the Vigilante kills the Squeaker, the Squeaker is silenced, though an Innocent is dead. Remember, the Squeaker gives away the Defender's identity even if a Doctor or Healer saves them
- Desert Warrior- the Desert Warrior kills every odd night... however, the DW only succeeds if their target is a QA, otherwise the kill doesn't take place, and the identity of the intended target is not revealed in the night post
- Detective- PMs me one person every odd-# night. Gets PMed a response either "guilty" or "innocent", though no specific information past that. Guilty means a baddie - mafia/GR/quarky. However, before the game begins, a die is rolled. There is a 4% chance the Detective is a Sucky Detective, and reverses everything (ie, guilty appears innocent and innocent appears guilty). Another 4% chance that they're a Paranoid Detective, where everyone appears guilty, and another 4% chance that they're a Naive Detective, where everyone appears innocent. Of course, the Detective doesn't know his own status- however, the Mafiosos know the Detective's status, though the Mafia doesn't know the identity of the Detective
- Mayor- the Mayor is a Innocent. Everyone knows who the Mayor is. Also, the Mayor, via his/her power, can stop one lynching that he/she feels is wrong
- Bodyguard- knows who the Illusionist is. The Bodyguard can choose to (if he/she wants to) protect someone each night. They cannot protect themselves, but they CAN protect the same person 2 nights in a row (but NOT 3 nights in a row). If the chosen person is attacked that night, there are 3 equally likely outcomes: (1) the Bodyguard will protect the chosen person from harm, (2) the Bodyguard will die in place of the chosen person, or (3) the Bodyguard will kill the attacker

Day and Night Posts
Intro: A Bizarre Bazaar
A camel named Sando plopped wearily into the tall brass gates of Oasis- the mighty doors that sealed it from the shifting sands outside. Sando was at the end of his rope after a long, hot journey from deep within the desert with the nomad caravan.
His masters shouted out jovially to the turban-clad residents of Oasis, the swathes of merchants and traders and demi-sultans that passed by in the sweltering, tropical streets. For they meant one thing to the nomads: money.
Oasis had been built hundreds of years ago around the great watering holes in the middle of the desert, walling in everything from ancient pyramid temples to palm tree oases to urchin-filled markets to the grand palaces of the demi-sultans. Now Oasis was the center of trading and commerce for the entire southern half of Content Phoenix... as well as a location for Quarky sleeper agents to plan their missions and carry out hostile operations.
The camel didn't know any of this, or perhaps it just didn't care, for it continued down the street and turned a corner at its master's command. Sando was too tired not to obey, and plus he trusted his masters. The nomad culture revered camels- almost to the point of worship.
Sando saw an odd flash out of the corner of his eye... trained to look for shiny things in the endless desert, he turned his head sharply, almost throwing the nomad off... but it was just the bazaar. The grand market was filled with hundreds of people, haggling and shouting and stealing and leading groups of animals to their new homes. Sando was suddenly glad that he wasn't about to be sold. But that odd flash caught his eye again- he looked over, and saw a knife tucked in someone's belt. Interesting. It was a traditional rule in Oasis that no weapons were allowed in the bazaar. This was a bizarre bazaar.
The bored camel watched as the knife-weilding person walked calmly through the bazaar, their hand twitching every time someone glanced near their knife. But nobody saw it except Sando, who watched with his big black eyes as the nomads led the camel caravan toward a specific market stall.
The shadowy figure was at the other end of the bazaar now, and Sando could hardly see them anymore... a waterfall splashed down from a salty pillar at the far side, and the knife-assassin lurked there, waiting and watching. Finally, none less than the Mayor walked past, surrounded by bodyguards.
They weren't enough.
The Quarky sleeper agent had been reactivated, and jumped from the shadows of the waterfall to deal the fatal blow. In seconds, the assassin was also dead at the hands of the bodyguard, but the signal spread across the city like wildfire.
The other Quarky sleeper agents were activated. It was time to carry out their mission.
And somewhere in a small warehouse at one end of the city, the Mafia gathered... four of them. A Thief. An Assassin. A Bankroller. And the Godfather. The four of them were discussing who they would off tonight.
Sando, oblivious to the action, spun his head around as he noticed something else. A desert warrior was entering the bazaar, his/her dark face wrapped in a sandy turban to keep out the blazing sun, with a sash of bullets connected to a machine gun at the ready. The Desert Warrior, looking like a terrorist from the sands, turned a corner and disappeared into the complex, winding streets of Oasis, ready to hunt down the Quarky Agents.
In a penthouse apartment in a swanky hotel, one of the five various houses that the Grim Reaper owned, the master of death himself/herself sharpened his/her scythe, waiting for the coming nights.
And the Vigilante was getting ready, too, for he/she would start killing on the 3rd night.
In separate houses, the Doctor was packing his/her medical kit and the Healer was preparing his/her herbal concoctions, hoping to save some lives tonight. The Bodyguard was possibly thinking the same thing as he/she clipped on a heavy-duty armor vest.
Oasis would never again be the same.
and of course the Mafia special abilities of the Thief and the Godfather can be used any night but not two nights in a row
Mafia III is on!
oops, forgot to add that E.S. Johsnon was elected as the new Mayor!
N1: The Watchful Djinn
The desert moon hung over the city like a watchful djinn, silent and ever-present. A Mafia assassin prowled the tangled, cobbled streets, his/her trained on an extravagant house at the end of the drive. This was a wealthy neighborhood, a place where many-windowed villas looked out over mini-oases and palm-tree-lined pools. The assassin put a small object into his/her mouth and then began climbing up a back wall of the house, which was made of fuzzy glass and usually had water sliding down it into the pool below, but at night it was switched off, with a dreamy purple light-strip glowing at its bottom. Crickets chirped gently as the assassin climbed up onto an upper deck, ignoring a potted cactus and reaching a glass wall. At the other end of the wall was a small bedroom where a man slept.
Itachi-san grumbled in his sleep, muttering something.
The Mafia assassin grinned, and took the object out of his/her mouth- it was a small gas canister, with an incredibly sharp diamond at its nozzle. The assassin drove it into the glass, grinding it deeper until it poked out at the other end. By this time, alarms were blaring and Itachi had woken, gawking at the strange scene in front of him, but it was too late, he couldn't have done anything anyway.
A pearly gas, lit by the sheen of the moon, hissed out of the canister and into the room, pushing the air to the ceiling as it expanded to fill its space. Itachi began coughing and gasping, reaching for the edge of the bed as his face turned darker and darker shades of interesting colors.
"You'll... never... get... away... with... this... again!" he managed to choke out before collapsing, dead on his lush carpet.
Then the Mafia assassin was gone, the moon revealing an empty deck.
A Quarky Agent, busy with a lockpick at the front door, grunted in confusion when he/she heard the alarm. The spy slipped away into the night.
Across town, another Quarky Agent was waiting outside Kingofpain's house, but he/she needed assistance in climbing the gnarled cactus to enter the air ducts on the side of the house. The QA needed help, but he/she was alone. Sighing, the agent crept away, across the shriveled grass (it was hard to keep a good lawn during Oasis's dry season).
Nearby, the Doctor waited by a quiet house. Nothing new there.
And in the Herbalists' District of Oasis, the Healer sat in his/her apartment. He/she had decided to heal nobody tonight. The Bodyguard wasn't that far away, standing defiantly at someone's doorstep all night, ready to protect them at all costs. Fortunately, nobody came to kill his/her charge, and in the morning they went home and put away their armor vest.
Itachi's neighbors woke to the shrill alarm, and soon various townsfolk were gathered in Vital Square, which was really a patch of desert in the middle of the city with the original oasis itself in the center, a shallow watering hole where migrating herds of animals used to come and drink, before the people came along. The square was surrounded by a complicated network of canals that fleshed out the very center of Oasis.
The citizens of Oasis were mad... it was time to lynch a baddie!
D1: Dehydration and Organ Donation
As the red sun sank below its bed of heat haze on the distant dunes, the angry citizens of Oasis were shouting for the death of their victim.
"You idiots!" he kept snapping as they trussed up his legs and arms in scratchy ropes. "You'll regret this moment!"
"Somehow I don't think so," muttered Frost, who had tied the last rope. "Brandonb and Kingofpain were pretty convincing."
"That doesn't mean anything!" cried Pw0nzd. He looked around pleadingly at the faces of his friends... but they were all stony and hardened. Even his fellow Mafiosos, who had to remain conspicuous in the crowd.
"No!" he yelped, as the townsfolk began to drag him toward the mighty sajaro cactus that reared out of Vital Square, spiky and spiny and rustling slightly in the rare desert wind. Then Pw0nzd's eye caught the Mayor's, who was standing on a balcony overlooking the square.
"Mr. Mayor!" he shouted. "Mr. Johnson!!! Please! You can call it off! Please... please..." his voice tapered off and then they threw the Mafioso onto the cactus. He screamed in pain (a terrifying, bloodcurdling scream) as the giant spines went through him and out the other side, slick with blood.
"At least... donate... my organs... to the Mafioso Organ Fund..." he gasped, before coughing and dying.
"He was Mafia!" people were saying in amazement. As the sun sank even lower into the bronze sands, a group of nomads bolted into the square, dragging with them a cloth-clad figure with a high turban and a machine gun.
"What's the meaning of this???" Mayor Johnson boomed.
One of the nomads began jabbering in some forgotten language, so Tman, who was an avid learner of languages, began to translate: "We found him in the desert, dehydrated and dying, Lord Mayor. He had been wandering for days!"
The dying man was flipped over, and people saw the sash of bullets across his chest.
"The Desert Warrior," murmured Nayana. "So that's where he's been!"
Tman pulled away the turban, and the face of Ploper was revealed, already dead from the unrelenting sun and lack of water.
Later, as the two bodies were being cremated (there was no way you could bury bodies in Oasis, out here in the desert), the moon had risen again, and the Mafia were plotting their next kill.
Among the spires and tangled alleyways of Oasis, the Doctor and Healer were packing their things, getting ready for that. Likewise was the Bodyguard. The Grim Reaper was sharpening his/her scythe. The Illusionist was taking deep breaths, preparing his/her powers. And the QAs were separately plotting their nighttime kill, hoping they would meet somewhere in the fountains and statues of Oasis's plazas.
If any of those people are alive, that is.
N2: Tabbard and Tockley
A wooden sign in the shape of an anvil that read 'Tabbard and Tockley' swayed slightly in the breeze- a good sign of the soon-to-come wet season. But it wasn't here yet. Drifts of sand flew past the locked door of Tabbard and Tockley, reminiscing a quiet night.
A stray jackal bounded past, sniffing the hot air, passing a dark figure that quickly receded into the night.
A few minutes later, the figure reappeared and knocked on the door- tap. Tap tap. Tap tap tap. Tap. Tap tap.
The figure waited patiently for exactly 17 seconds and knocked one more time. The door opened. The figure stepped in. The door closed.
LIS, whistling, returned to his flat, thinking to himself about the nice, peaceful night ahead of him. However, when he walked in, junk was everywhere and his things had been strewn throughout the various rooms, searched through and bashed and scattered. Dismayed, LIS rang the town constable, but the constable was busy with a small fire. Grumbling, LIS called the other person he knew well- the Bodyguard- but the Bodyguard was waiting outside a quiet house tonight, standing defiantly in front of the door.
The Healer waited by a nearby house, hiding in the bushes should he/she be needed. He/she wasn't needed.
Tabbard and Tockley, again
Ten minutes later, the mysterious figure emerged again, their pockets lighter from lost gold, but heavier with a new weapon. The figure prowled closer and closer to Kingofpain's house, holding a strange-looking giant claw- a cactus blade.
Look! You can see a medallion engraved with the emblem of the Quarky Secret Service around the figure's neck. The Quarky Agent crept closer to Kingofpain's spacious house.
But something made the figure freeze. A darkly illuminated person standing at the corner of the street, humming a tune to himself/herself. The Doctor. The Quarky Agent hissed. If only the other QA were here, the two of them could've devised a diversion for the Doctor while one of them slept inside to deal the fatal blow to KOP. Alas, it was not to be so. The QA was one with the shadows again.
Forty Minutes Later
That other QA yawned sleepily as he/she checked the perimeter around Lucifer's ramshackle house near a canal in Oasis's center. Lucifer was a boat-lover, and had to make sure everything was perfect about his boat. Every detail was important. Thus, Lucifer was out in the middle of the canal tonight, making some repairs to the boat's hull.
The Quarky Agent sighed, exasperated. How would he/she reach the boat? Now only if the other Quarky Agent were here, the two of them could steal and pilot one of the boats from the marina downshore. But with only one person!!! The QA couldn't captain one of the desert dhows on his/her own. Muttering, he/she headed back home, trying to think of a way out of the Quarky dilemma. Persistence, the QA thought. Persistence.
Tabbard and Tockley, again
Nayana walked past the locked, silent door of Tabbard and Tockley, down the road, toward the end of the street. She had been up all night, and sleep was starting to take its toll. She stumbled slightly on her nighttime walk down the street, and one might think she was drunk if you didn't know better.
The Mafia hitman knew better.
The hitman, waiting in a car at the end of the street, tapped his foot patiently while watching Nayana's position through the mirror. He began fitting on the silencer, not even a bit disturbed by what he was about to do. When the Mafiosos talked, he listened. And their instructions were clear.
The hitman stepped out of the car and shot Nayana three times in the head. Then he got in the car and drove away. Her body would be found in the morning, and the constable (feeling guilty that his time had been consumed by a tiny kitchen fire) tried to cover it up for much of the day.
But rumors spread, and news leaked, and soon the citizens of Oasis were gathered in the central square again. Their task: to lynch a baddie!
D2: A Fatal Mistake
"Come on, guys!" Ben Law complained. "Brandonb is the Godfather! Listen to me!!!"
"Nobody's listened to you," Brandonb retorted. "Not even the Mayor."
Ben Law's eyes flickered around nervously. Then: "Where's sagekid?"
"She couldn't handle the suspense," Frost chuckled. "She fled into the desert a few hours ago."
"What... what about SillouhetteMind?" Ben Law gasped. "He can help me!"
"No, he had urgent business in the capital city Denbrain," explained Tman.
Ben Law looked defeated now. "You'll regret this!"
"Then reveal your role!" Frost snapped. "It'll do you no harm now!"
"I'm taking it to the grave," Ben Law responded.
"Kill him already!" ES Johnson boomed. "My luxurious pool with hot girls and cold lemonade is waiting for me!"
"As you wish, Mayor," said Frost, pulling out his Penguin Pistol©, a relic from his baddie-killing days in Awesomeville. He shot Ben Law on the spot and then the townsfolk started screaming and shouting in a flood to tear down Ben's house.
"A baddie, a baddie!" they roared on their way to his small flat. In the crowd pulsed, like a human snake- but then they all froze in unison, disbelieving. The herbal concoctions and ancient alchemy lorebooks of a Healer were strewn across Mr. Law's bed.
"Damn," whistled dawh. "He made a fatal mistake."
Fearful, the residents of Oasis returned home, knowing that the night ahead would be a long and deadly one. The Mafia were still at large, and who knew how many QAs were left! But they felt a bit comforted, as the Vigilante (if he/she was still alive) would also be visiting a (hopefully) bad guy tonight, and the Doctor and Bodyguard may still be around to help out.
Either way, there was no denying it as crackles of blue static electricity lit up the distant, dusty sky.
There would be a sandstorm tonight.
N3: Ripple Effect
|Deep into the night
The sky was full of energy tonight, a dark sea of billions of stars, galaxies and nebulas sprawling across the heavens. Twirling, fleeting clouds whipped past the low-hanging moon, which was smaller than usual tonight... giving up its mantle for the stars.
The stars even twinkled on the surface of the canals, shining with their galactic light and giving the water a peaceful, luminescent quality.
Then an oar slipped softly into the water, distorting the image of the night sky as the ripples spread outward like a breath of wind.
"Enough of this poetic nonsense," grumbled the Vigilante, and started rowing faster
Eventually, another boat emerged out of the mist like a wooden isle, with Scott adjusting some riggings at the back.
The Vigilante pulled up alongside, and Scott looked up, confused.
"What are you doing here?" Scott said.
"My interest is with the Innocents," the Vigilante replied darkly. "And I don't think you share that interest."
Before Scott could protest, the Vigilante had leapt over the gap between the boats and had tackled Scott to the floor. Scott snarled and tried to throw the Vigilante off, but the nighttime ninja wouldn't be denied... Scott was hefted up and dragged toward the side of his boat...
That was when Scott jammed his elbow upward, catching the Vigilante in the chin- the Vigilante stumbled backwards, hissing in pain, hand reaching for something at his/her belt.
Before the Vigilante could draw the long fencing rapier, Scott tackled him/her overboard, and they hit the starlit water with a splash. Growling the Vigilante tried to grab Scott's chest, but the man was already behind the Vigilante and going for his/her throat. The Vigilante, using his/her legs skillfully, slammed Scott backwards into his boat, and the targeted man let go, the wind knocked out of him. The Vigilante took a second to recover and then grabbed Scott's neck, dipping his head underwater repeatedly until he moved no more.
The bloated body was only found the next morning (after both the Doctor and Bodyguard waited outside their charges' houses all night, finally going home, disgruntled) when the abandoned boat was found drifting across the canal, pilotless.
Frost yawned, trying to get some sleep, but he just couldn't. He thought he heard people discussing something in low voices outside his house, but he shrugged it away as paranoia. Oasis had become a warzone, after all.
But the whisperings persisted, and finally Frost, intrigued by the noise, crept downstairs, peering out of a hallway window. What he saw made him take two steps back in surprise.
A giant lion was perched on his doorstep! The beast had an almost humanlike face, though Frost couldn't see the face from his window. The strange, massive animal was a Sphinx of the highest groom, and it was talking to something.
Frost cracked the window open a little and strained to hear the Sphinx's words... it was a riddle!
When the Sphinx was done giving the riddle, the Mafia- instead of running away, which was an option- began to fervently discuss the puzzle. They only had one guess.
Finally one broke away from the group. "Good riddle," the Mafioso acknowledged, and the Sphinx smiled. "The answer is 1 dollar!" the Mafioso continued. "1 use of the scale only. This may at first seem impossible, but it isn't. Number the boxes 1-10 then take 1 CD from Box 1, 2 CDs from Box 2, etc. Then put them all in a pile and weigh that pile only once. The total will be higher than if all the boxes contained alpha cds (13 g) since some of the delta ones (15 g) are included. So subtract the actual weight from the weight if they were all 13g, and that figure will be 15*n, where n is the number of the bag with the deltas."
"Good job," the Sphinx said, nodding, and stepped aside.
Frost gulped. What was going on? The Mafia had answered the riddle correctly, so the Sphinx was letting them come in? Nervously, he ran to his room, where he kept his Penguin Pistol©, but he had no more bullets. By the time he had rummaged through all of his drawers, the Mafia was stomping up the stairs. Frost grabbed a nearby baseball bat and started swinging it in swooshing loops, ready to fight his way out.
Unfortunately, the footsteps had stopped at the stairs, and the sound of mechanical tinkering reached Frost's ears. Confused, he opened the door slightly to see the Mafioso disappearing out the front door and into the darkness, where his/her cronies were waiting.
Frost looked at the stairs. A bomb had been left there, and was ticking down quickly... 4... 3... 2...
Frost roared in anger and charged down the stairs, swinging the bat as he disappeared into the light.
A few hours later, the sun rose to the third day since the Mafia and QAs had appeared in Oasis, and the townsfolk of Oasis were on a warpath, gathering on a giant barge in one of the bigger canals of Oasis to discuss who should be executed.
D3: No Checks, No Balances
The canal barge's dark hull seared with the light of the sun and the angry echoes of the crowd's shouts. "...Grey Cells Grey Cells Grey Cells Grey..."
He writhed as the executioners clamped chains on him, growling. "There's no checks and balances!" he shouted. "That's what Mafia IV needs! Some unrealitydamn checks and balances! You'll be sorry you ever lynched me and pw0nzd! The Mafia will prevail! No checks and balances!"
He was still screaming "Checks and baaalaaaanceeeeesssss" as they threw him overboard, falling 30 feet into the canal, where he would never surface.
"Fish food," muttered Itachi. "If there are any fish in these canals..."
"Yeah, there is," tman cut in. "Plenty of freshwater variety."
The crowd dispersed, excited that they had caught another Mafioso. Things were getting interesting, and the 4th night was fast approaching.
N4: Quarky Risen
The Doctor sighed and headed home. KOP hadn't needed protection after all.
The dark of night
Two things were happening at once. At the same time.
At one edge of town, a Mafioso edged closer to a well-defended villa, guarded by fences and motion-sensors. Unperturbed, the Mafioso ignored Slick's house and broke into his neighbor's house. It was easy work. From there, the Mafioso descended into the basement and then took the plaster covering away from the tunnel he/she had been digging all day. Silently, the Mafioso unhooked a flashlight from his/her belt and slipped into the tunnel, covering the exit in plaster again.
At the other end of town, a Quarky Agent was climbing a tree. He/she had discovered that a partner was not necessary for this kill. From the tree, the QA leapt onto the target's roof, where the agent proceeded to nudge open the skylight and drop in- right on top of Dawh, who had been walking by underneath.
It had been perfectly timed. The Quarky Agent had a knife extended downward as he/she fell, and the knife went deep into Dawh's neck before the QA had even landed on top of him. By the time they collapsed to the floor, Dawh was dead and the QA had pulled the knife out.
Then the QA waited... was Dawh the Sphinx? The QA knew, from his/her intensive training, that the Sphinx slowly morphed into the beast-form after it was killed. It took about a minute. Already 10-15 seconds had gone by.
The QA waited patiently, counting the seconds on his/her wristwatch. 20...25...30... Dawh's face seemed to be contorting, changing, expanding, getting hairier... or was that the QA's hopeful imagination? The QA shook it off and check the watch. 45...47...52...55... Dawh's face really was changing!
56...57...58... Is that the moonlight? Or was the body getting bigger? 59... 60...
Nothing. Just the moonlight playing tricks on the QA's eager mind. Sighing, the QA left the body there and jumped up, grabbing the lip of the skylight and pulling himself/herself into the desert air.
Back across town, the Mafioso stood over Slick's body, holding a broken wine bottle. Both blood and wine were running everywhere, and shattered pieces of glass were sticking out of the back of Slick's head. The paranoid citizen of Oasis had heard the Mafioso coming and armed himself with a wine bottle, which the Mafioso had quickly struggled away and beat Slick to death with it. Red juice dripped from the killer's hands- blood? Wine? Probably both.
Smiling to himself/herself, the Mafioso jumped over a balcony onto the ground floor and headed into Slick's basement, where the tunnel was waiting. The tunnel to a possible victory.
D4: Quarky Fallen
"Sorry," someone shouted. "Unreality has to rush!"
"What does that matter-" Kat began, but she was shot dead by an executioner's squad before she could finish.
"Come on, chop chop hurry on home!" the Mayor called. "Unreality has to hurry up! It's the 5th night tonight! Good luck, all!"
And everyone rushed home. The Mafia would kill tonight... and the Vigilante... but wait? What of the QAs?
With Kat's death, they were gone from Oasis.
N5: An Explosive End
"Goodbye, Tman- I mean, Nayana2," the Vigilante- Brandonb- said before firing. Nayana2's body fell into the gutter. Unfortunately, she had been the Sage.
Across town, Dnae the Illusionist-turned-Sphinx protected KOP (the Inspector) but it was in vain. The last Mafioso, Itachi, was elsewhere tonight.
Bam! Bam! LIS fell to the ground, already dead. Itachi rushed up to the body and ripped open the suit, revealing a metallic torso with a numeric display on top: 294 seconds remaining, it bleeped. 293...292...291...
Itachi skillfully (being the Bankroller) opened up the metal torso and look at the tangle of wires and explosives inside. He was thinking of his fellow Mafiosos: Pw0nzd, Scott and GC, and how they had at least beaten the Quarky Agents, who had turned out to be Nayana and Ravi (Kat). And of course the Grim Reaper on the first night- Itachi1.
Itachi was busy separating and trimming wires, clumping them into different parts of the hollow torso. Frost, the Bodyguard, and Dawh, the Doctor weren't here to save LIS. It was just Itachi and the Bomb.
Not even Lucifer (Frost2) the Detective could've detected where Itachi was tonight. He had covered his tracks well.
Sagekid (later to be Cherry Lane), the Squeaker, never had a chance to give away Slick (the Defender's) identity. Itachi didn't need it- he had made a logical (and lucky) guess to off Slick- but killing LIS was crucial before killing the Vigilante (who he also had a pretty good idea of who it was).
Sweat started to trickle down Itachi's brow. Would he finish in time? Mafia IV's Bomb would be a much more instantaneous explosion on death like in Mafia II. But Itachi had lucked out... or maybe not... 25...20....15...14...
He discarded a clump of wires. He was looking for the main power cord. The main battery wire. 11....10...9... Here, here, in this clump! A trio of 3 wires (red, green, blue) wrapped together in a spiral. 8...7... Itachi knew he had to cut away the aux power cable first. He nervously closed his eyes and sawed through the green wire with a piece of chipped steel...6...5... He froze. It had worked. It was down to the blue and red wire... 4...3... Blue? Red? Blue? Red? Red? Blue? 2... 1...
Whether Itachi cut the right wire, but it was too late, or whether he cut the wrong wire, will never be known. But one thing is for sure- the last Mafioso was engulfed in a maelstrom of fire and light, and not even a body was found.
Everyone in Oasis heard the explosion. Rejoicing- and also nervous- they flooded the streets until they found out what happened. LIS had died in the name of the Innocents, and the scourge of the baddies was no more!
The Host God, Unreality, snarled down at the desert city. He did not approve of this game. Not just because of inactivity... because people had been mean to each other, people had bickered, people were overly impatient. Unreality turned away from the hazy, sun-scorched desert and back to his favored town of Awesomeville. He would make Mafia IV amazing, that's for sure
