Harry had witnessed Voldemort’s resurrection, but the Ministry of Magic refused to believe Dumbledore. It would be up to the Order of the Phoenix to protect the wizarding world.
Umbridge was put in place as Grand Inquisitor, both to monitor Dumbledore and to protect the students of Hogwarts from what the official view held as his pernicious lies; Filch gleefully followed her lead, not caring about the politics, but eager to further punish the students.
Even the escape of Bellatrix Lestrange could not convince the Ministry of the true threat. But some of the students were convinced; between the growing threat and Umbridge’s refusal to actually teach Defence against the Dark Arts, Ron and Hermione felt they needed Harry to take the lead, teaching Luna and Ginny and organising with Fred and George to keep their Dumbledore’s Army a secret.
Harry asked his godfather Sirius for advice; “how am I supposed to teach them? I’m just a student as well.” The rest of the Order helped as well; Tonks, Moody, and the Auror Kingsley Shackleford all contributed ideas for Harry’s lessons.
But even amongst the students, there was resistance; Draco eagerly reported whatever he could to Umbridge, while his father Lucius reluctantly provided safe harbor for the freed Death Eaters, still trying to buy his way back into the Dark Lord’s good graces.
Umbridge sat in her office, fuming. How dare Harry defy her! Someone simply had to be punished for it. But who? Perhaps if she eliminated a favorite teacher...
Yes. Here was one: she could come up with an excuse to be rid of Fat Tony. A crowd gathered at the foot of the main stairs as Umbridge stood over Fat Tony, a triumphant smirk on her face as she pointed to the door, Tony’s tear-stained face horror-struck as he realized there was no appeal.
“How could she?” “But Tony was my favorite...” “Who’ll be next?” The students only grew more confused as word of Umbridge’s cruelty spread. But the loss of another good teacher only made Dumbledore’s Army more determined to take their education into their own hands; how else could they prepare themselves when the Ministry of Magic seemed determined to keep them vulnerable?
Dobby led Harry to the Room of Requirement, the meeting place that would ensure Draco never found any proof to bring to Umbridge. Using the Room of Requirement would offer them materials as well: textbooks, cushions for practicing Stupefy, and room enough for as many students as wished to come.
Fred and George were keeping Umbridge busy in their own way; between preparing to open a shop and perfecting more pranks, their actions kept her on the defensive. Though both worked together to prepare the pranks, Fred set most of them off, leaving George clear should they be caught. So, as all of the others were going about looking either to cause trouble or defend themselves, George found a comfy vantage point to watch and enjoy as he looked for clues amidst the chaos.
But trouble was brewing outside the castle as well; pranks would not be sufficient to keep the Death Eaters from causing problems. Though Snape fed information from one side to the other, neither the Order of the Phoenix nor the Death Eaters were entirely certain what the other was planning.
So, despite Snape’s spying, the Order was unprepared when Bellatrix Lestrange snuck out of the Malfoy mansion. She rushed to Marth’s window, whispering Silencio, then Crucio, cackling madly as Marth writhed in silent pain, until at last his heart gave out. Now, the Ministry would have no choice but to return Fat Tony to duty.
Though they were unprepared for Marth’s death, the Order was quick to respond, sending Moody to interrogate Aaryan. He hobbled into Aar’s office, his magical eye spinning wildly as he asked where Aar had been earlier that evening. Moody’s questions kept Aar busy through the night.
A shriek rang through the castle when Trelawney entered Marth’s room and discovered his twisted corpse. Dumbledore and McGonagall rushed to the scene; Dumbledore quickly took in the scene and hurried off to keep the students in line while McGonagall attempted to comfort the seer, hiding her annoyance as Trelawney continued her theatrics.
Umbridge smirked at first as she heard of the death. She hadn’t been terribly fond of Marth, either. Perhaps another rule....“no one shall speak of deaths in the castle”? But she faltered when she received an owl at breakfast. Hogwarts was a teacher short; Fat Tony was to be reinstated. Very well, she thought, give them a day, and they’ll find more replacements. She could remove someone else later.
The students of Dumbledore's Army were in shock; they'd known the danger was real, but this was more immediate than even they'd expected. Harry quickly gathered Ron and Hermione to plan for an emergency meeting; the others would surely need reassurance after Marth's death.
For now, though, the tables were abuzz with gossip and suspicion; perhaps Aplusle or Hirk was a Death Eater in disguise. Even uncovering one of Umbridge's hidden agents would be helpful; her awful restrictions kept the students dispirited and isolated with their fears.
Dumbledore's Army gathered, practicing wards as reassurance against the now all-too-real danger. Harry wandered the room, careful not to cross any of the wards; should he do so, the risk of death was very real. But some students' wards were inconsistent, growing and shrinking with the caster's focus; one grew into Aplusle's path. It was too late for him to avoid, and Harry's warm corpse sprawled before Cho, leaving Dumbledore's Army without their leader.
The students were still in shock over Harry's death as they quietly snuck back to their rooms. How would Dumbledore's Army continue without its teacher? He was the only one among them, many thought, who had any real experience fighting the Dark Arts; sure, Ron and Hermione had helped him, but he alone had fought off the dementors and faced the Dark Lord.
Hermione did her best to keep the students from panic, but even with Ron’s help, she was on the verge of panic herself, just from the adding Dumbledore’s Army to the stress of the impending O.W.L.s. She didn’t want to lash out at Ron, but she needed an outlet for her stress.
“No, not that book! The other one! We’re going to work on patronuses next meeting, not counter-hexes!” Hermione snapped as she and Ron sat in the Room of Requirement, trying to write lesson plans. The coins had already been reset to show a meeting for Tuesday, but the lesson wasn’t ready yet, and Hermione had an essay for Potions, and a problem set for Arithmancy, and how would Ron ever manage his Astronomy chart without her help? At least Ron could bring her books, and he was willing to sit through her constant fussing. The two of them worked through the night, the Room of Requirement soundproofing itself for their convenience, keeping them unaware of the chaos elsewhere in the castle.
After killing Marth, Bellatrix had a taste for blood; she decided curr3nt would make a good second target. He would scream so prettily! She slowly slipped through the window of curr’s room, grinning as she aimed her wand at his peacefully sleeping face. Will he even realize he’s not dreaming? She wondered idly as she hissed Crucio. He didn’t seem to be waking up as he moaned and writhed in pain; perhaps he’d continue to think it a nightmare until his heart gave out. Still focused on him, she backed away to float outside the window, hiding in case anyone decided to investigate as his shrieks and screams of pain grew louder.
Curr woke to his own screams of pain, writhing as he realized the torment was more than just a nightmare. It could only be the work of Death Eaters; he wanted to warn the castle, but his limbs would not obey him. He managed, barely, to escape his bed, but lay writhing and screaming on the floor when Filch found him moments later. Umbridge had sent Filch to look for evidence to eliminate curr, but it looked like someone had gotten to him first. No matter, curr was gone either way.
Sirius had grown sick of hiding in his family mansion; he snuck out, disguised as a dog, reaching the castle just in time to hear word of his godson's death. How could this have happened, he thought, what about the prophecy? Still in his animal form, he sought out the still-warm body, curling around it and watching for Aplusle's ghost to return.
Sirius rushed back to London to share the news of Harry’s death. Despite its apparently accidental nature, Moody felt certain the Death Eaters were somehow behind it. His magical eye whirling, Moody limped into Segul’s office, his voice harsh as he began to question Se, trying to discover how the Death Eaters had managed this.
Hidden in the prefects’ bathroom, Kira looked around frantically; he thought he’d packed enough Polyjuice Potion, but he’d miscalculated. He would have to remain hidden until the transformation was complete, he’d have to remain quiet despite the pain of shifting bones as it wore off and he became EDM once more. Though she had little to hide, really, in this atmosphere the transformation alone would cast suspicion on EDM if discovered.
George snuck out of Gryffindor Tower, determined to keep Fat Tony occupied for the night. Perhaps some Puking Pastiles in his tea will keep him out of trouble, George thought, hurrying down to the kitchens to have Dobby take up the poisoned tea. The Puking Pastiles were stronger than George had anticipated, though, and Fat Tony lay limp on the floor when Bellatrix snuck in to report on curr’s death. She was barely in time to counteract the effects and keep Fat Tony alive.
Everyone in Hogwarts was thinking the same thing after last night: these deaths are no coincidence. We need to get whoever is doing this, and fast. Whispered suspicions followed Hirk, Framm, and Barc through the halls. All three sought to clear their names, uncomfortable under the poorly-hidden glares of Dumbledore’s Army.
Cho was in tears, her head buried in Marietta Edgecombe’s shoulder as her best friend tried to comfort her. This was her second boyfriend to die; Cho felt like it was somehow her fault. However, she seemed to notice a ghost figure above her. Upon closer inspection, the ghost was in the form of a stag. Was this a coincidence, or was Harry back from the dead? Cho didn’t have much time to think about this, though, as Marietta snapped her back to what was going before them.
Accusations flew; almost half the surviving players stood under suspicion, until at last Barc misstepped and drew the ire of the crowd when he asked after Filch’s loathsome cat. Who would look questioningly on Mrs. Norris’s absence but Filch himself?
And so the votes on Barc grew, the missing cat apparently evidence enough to condemn him. At day’s end, it seemed he was to be ousted. Scowling, he limped away from the castle; with his loss, Umbridge had lost her best help at the castle.
Despite the spate of deaths, the castle was as unprotected as before when Bellatrix stole through the dungeons to attack araver. Him she lured to the dungeons under false promises, leaving her free to torture him without fearing to be heard. Crucio she screamed, cackling as araver tried in vain to protect himself from her curse.
The students filed into the Great Hall, their whispered suspicions filling the room as news of EDM’s expulsion spread. Was Voldemort finally vulnerable? They’d been sure of his identity for two days, but feared to waste time trying to kill him while his protectress remained.
Now that Dumbledore had finally taken action, though, the students dared to hope he’d chosen his target well; perhaps this time, Voldemort would truly die. So the votes piled on quickly. Laughing and smirking, Fat Tony even voted for himself, a bluff, perhaps, meant to convince the others he was still invulnerable?
No matter; the students had faith in their headmaster’s wisdom. While a few continued to push elsewhere for answers, knowing there were time and votes enough to reveal Fat Tony, most went straight for the throat. The outcome seemed certain by lunchtime. So all that remained was to keep pressing for information; first Segul, then Krystal was questioned, though most votes remained constant on Fat Tony. By day’s end, though, all were satisfied, or close enough to return to the certain target.
And so, still smirking, still feigning invulnerable confidence, Fat Tony threw a peace sign as he sauntered out, yelling over his shoulder, “you haven’t stopped me yet!” Even as the crowd forced him from the castle, Voldemort had faith that his loyal Death Eaters would find a way to bring him back once more.
Harry breathed a sigh of relief as Voldemort disappeared; at least for now, he and his classmates would be safe. And hopefully now the Ministry of Magic would believe he’d been telling the truth all along. The scars from Umbridge’s punishment would forever remind him how fearful the Ministry could be of harsh truths, no matter how they’d react when forced to confront them.
Alone now, Lucius set about covering his tracks. He snuck into the castle, intent on covering his tracks; but Hermione and Umbridge were both still patrolling the halls when he attempted to enter; it was too risky for Lucius to act tonight.
Grumbling, the old man withdrew, hoping his son Draco retained enough loyalty to tell his father if any news came to Umbridge’s attention. At least that would give Lucius warning if he was at any risk. And Draco tended to follow around that Mudblood girl* anyway, so he could provide information if Dumbledore’s Army grew suspicious as well.
But tonight as Draco snuck after Hermione, he only saw a whispered meeting with Fred and George. When the three split ways, Draco continued after Hermione until she returned to the Gryffindor common room. So he didn’t see when George flung red and mauve marbles into the Charms classroom, leaving a duplicating surprise for Segul.
Out in the woods, Sirius, again as a large dog, sought out another of the fresh corpses; tonight, he curled against araver’s body, keeping vigil as he waited for the ghost to return. The air cooled as araver’s ghost appeared, rising out of the cold body as Sirius watched. Sirius walked alongside as the newly-risen ghost glided towards the castle; araver’s business with the Ministry, the Order, and the Death Eaters was not yet finished.
Harry’s ghost had some business of his own; Vommack needed to go, he was sure of it. But just as Harry approached Vomm’s office, Moody stomped in, the door crashing against the wall as Moody growled a question to Vomm.
