A Spy is a general term for any role that learns one or multiple of the following: the faction, role, target, or action of another player. The spy is a critical role and has been used since the origin of Mafia.

Role Spy

Role spy is a variation of spying where the actor targets a player and learns that player's role. The Role Spy is the heart of game theory and is the most basic form of information gathering. Compared to other variants, a spy that learns the role of his target is usually the most powerful. In many cases, after learning the role of a player, a spy may be able to deduce the faction, target, and action of the player that he spied.

Additionally, a role spy who has BTSC with a player who has a RID Kill, RID Recruit, or RID Lynch Save adds overwhelming power to the group.

Follow Spy

Following (sometimes called Follow Spy) is a variation of spying where the actor targets a player and learns that player's target for the night. It is regarded as a less effective variation of the role spy since it will not narrow down a player's role and faction directly. However if enough actions are shown in the night post, it can still provide enough indirect information to determine the role of the player who was followed, and in some rare cases even the role of that players' target (making it theoretically possible to act like a double spy action).

Action Spy

Action Spy is a variation of spying where the actor targets a player and learns that player's action (ability). It is regarded as a less effective variation of the role spy since it will not narrow down a player's role and faction directly unless there is only one role with that ability. It is also a weaker variation of the follow spy since it will not reveal the player's target, but if enough actions are shown in the night post, it can still provide enough indirect information.

Faction Spy

Faction spy is a variation of spying where the actor targets a player and learns that player's (current) faction. It is regarded as a less effective variation of the role spy since it will not narrow down a player's role and faction directly. It is also less likely to provide indirect information about the target's role, even given a lot of information shown in the night post. It is most commonly used to determine the current allegiance of Indy roles that can be recruited to factions.
